Keflex plus Bactrim or Keflex alone for uncomplicated cellulitis? Turns out, it's complicated.
Bactrim and Keflex are different types of antibiotics. Bactrim is a combination of sulfonamide (a sulfa drug) and a folic acid inhibitor and Keflex is a cephalosporin antibiotic.
The two should usually not be given together from the microbiology standpoint. Keflex works best with actively growing bacteria since it works on the cell wall, but Bactrim slows the growth of the bacteria so the Keflex does not work as well. Same thing would be said of a Keflex and Doxycycline combo which is usually not given together.
