I'm surprised after awhile that the doctors would have just assumed the wife had developed Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The exact cause of IBS isn't known. There's no test to definitively diagnose IBS. Symptoms of IBS vary but are usually present for a long time. IBS is a chronic condition....there's no cure...people that develop it just have to learn to cope or manage it. Symptoms of IBS can be triggered by Food or Stress. The role of food allergy or intolerance in IBS isn't fully understood. A true food allergy rarely causes IBS. But many people have worse IBS symptoms when they eat or drink certain foods or beverages. Most people with IBS experience worse or more-frequent symptoms during periods of increased stress. But while stress may make symptoms worse, it doesn't cause them. IBS occurs more frequently in people under age 50. IBS is more common among women. Genes may play a role, as may shared factors in a family's environment or a combination of genes and environment.

As in.. Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Like... where in the story does she take a shit, let alone have symptoms of IBS in a big way? Did the person who wrote this even 'know what IBS is'? Good thing I know what the story actually is about, but... a 'less-informed' reader might turn away, thinking this is about scat or something else really gross like that. >.>

Why the mention of IBS? If she wasn't going to have watery, explosive diarrhea all over him what was the point?

I read your story only because the subject matter is a reality of my life. I suffer from IBS and was interested in your POV and your hypothasis. While I feel you were a tad off base with your explaination of passing wind, I found the rest of your essay interesting and quite possibly correct to a great degree. I enjoyed how the subject was approached (from the bowel POV)and probably learened more from Shamus's experiance than any of the specialists I've seen on the matter. Humourous and well written, it is a difficult subject to make interesting. You did.

It would be much better if:
- the dad didn't leave so the mom and son have to do things secretly. Sometimes even when the husband is home.
- the mom didn't catch the son masturbating.
- the son slowly gets the mom to do things with him, very difficult because the mom keeps refusing especially about the scat part.
- the mom doesn't like scat but does it to make the son happy and does it very reluctantly. (because I mean come on, a mom who's all excited about shitting and is lactose intolerant and has IBS and so happy to do it with her son is just not exciting, too easy.)

I have some comments about the ending. The epilog is not up to your own demonstrated standard of storytelling. It's a humdrum revenge fantasy that's been overdone by amateur Literologists by the hundreds. I'll hasten to add that this isn't as serious a flaw as some might think. It sounds bad, I'll give you that. But Mark Twain has to date written the greatest of all Great American Novels and he royally screwed the pooch in writing the ending. So you're in good fucking company.
