The brain arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) metabolic cascade, including phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) and cyclooxygenase (COX) expression. We hypothesized that other agents that target the brain AA cascade, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and glucocorticoids, also would ameliorate BD symptoms. Medication histories on subjects who had been prescribed lithium were collected from the Netherlands PHARMO Record Linkage System. Data were stratified according to drug classes that inhibit PLA(2) and/or COX enzymes, and duration of use. Incidence density (ID) of medication events (dose increase or substance change) was used as a proxy for clinical worsening. ID ratios in patients with the inhibitors plus lithium were compared to ratios in patients using lithium alone. Low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) significantly reduced the ID ratio of medication events, independent of us...A Comparative Study of Sexual Dysfunction due to Typical and Atypical Antipsychotics in Remitted Bipolar-I DisorderIndian journal of psychiatry, 2004In the remitted phase of bipolar I disorder, sexual dysfunction is commonly due to drugs used in the treatment rather than the disease itself. There are very few studies, especially in the Indian population, addressing the frequency of sexual dysfunction due to antipsychotics in bipolar I disorder. Hence this study was done to determine the sexual dysfunction due to antipsychotics and to compare the same among typical and atypical antipsychotics. A cross sectional study with 108 male patients of remitted bipolar I disorder (DSM-IV), chosen by purposive sampling technique was done. Psychopathology was assessed using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and Young Mania Rating Scale. Sexual side effects due to antipsychotics were assessed using the Udvalg for Kliniske ndersogelser (UKU) side effect rating scale. The total sample size was divided into two groups of those on typical antipsychotics (n = 53) and atypical an...The influence of bipolar disorder medication on sexual performanceJournal of Education, Health and SportSexual performance is one of the key aspects of good quality of life, both in healthy people and patients suffering from various mental disorders. Besides many reasons causing poor sexual performance, like mental condition itself, medication can alter one's ability to achieve satisfaction in sex. Sexual dysfunction is listed among one of side effects of psychotropic medications. Aim of this work is to determine an influence of pharmacotherapy on sexual function in patients with bipolar disorder. Results: Pharmacotherapy in patients suffering from bipolar disorder can cause a multitude of side effects, including malfunction in sexual performance. Extent of severity in poor sexual life depends on many factors among which are: type of drug taken, whether there are one or more drugs taken at the same time. Seems to be observed that quetiapine shows the least negative effect on sexual performance. Additionally, highest risk of sexual malfunction is observed in patients with polyther...Management of Antipsychotic-Related Sexual Dysfunction: Systematic ReviewThe Journal of Sexual Medicine, 2019Introduction: Sexual dysfunction is one of the most frequently occurring side-effects of antipsychotic medication, impacting both quality of life and adherence to treatment. Despite this, limited evidence-based guidance on treatment
